1919 as Frick & CO in Zurich created airline of Switzerland. 1920 fusion with the aero company Comte and Mittelholzer & CO. to the Ad Astra aero AG (Latin for to the stars fly).
First one was limited to air photography and need air traffic. In June 1922 first line flight Geneva Zurich
Driving Kraft with the Ad Astra was the flight pioneer walter Mittelholzer (director and chief pilot). On behalf of Junkers it flew to Berlin, Danzig and Riga. The Junkers F 13 flew starting from 1922 of Geneva over Zurich to Nuremberg. In the winter 1924/25 Mittelholzer flew under large difficulties to Teheran. The journey with two forced landings took one month.
Swiss of medium events of the 1920er years were Mittelholzers of Africa flights. The flights served for above all to the air photography and cartography. Thus it undertook 1924 the first transkontinentale water flight expedition of Zurich over Egypt to South Africa and whereupon the first overflight/flyover of the Kilimandscharo. This were technical maximum output for that time.
The Ad Astra aero began as the first airline of Switzerland with regular foreign flights. These were partly accomplished with work support. The modern Junkers airplanes F13 and G23 were only rented of the Ad Astra. Besides one dedicated oneself to post office and photo flights with smaller machines (partly superseded military aircraft as well as water airplanes starting from Zurich horn).
From the fusion of the Ad Astra aero with that, forced upon by Swiss federal office for air, 1931 the new airline Swissair, whose technical director Walter Mittelholzer became likewise, resulted to deficit eras and subsidized Balair.
