Austria is from the system of government a Federal Republic, is therefore divided the country on highest administrative unit into the following Lands of the Federal Republic with its capitals:

  1. Castle country (iron city)
  2. (complaint ford)
  3. Lower Austria (pc.
  4. Upper Austria (Linz)
  5. Salzburg (Salzburg)
  6. Steiermark (Graz)
  7. Tirol (Innsbruck)
  8. Vorarlberg (Bregenz)
  9. Vienna

The countries participate over the Upper House of Parliament in the legislation of the federation.

As the second management level there are the and districts. In the lowest management level the municipalities are settled. These can be still further partitioned: in the cities into urban districts; at municipalities, which cover several places, in Katastralgemeinden. These are however no more administrative units.
