APS stands for Advanced Planning of system. APS systems are used in the production economy for progressing. One according to dominant opinion did not recognize and accurate definition existed at present. It is to be stated however that it concerns with APS systems software modules, which replace the conventional production planning modules in ERP and/or to classical PPS systems. They are to avoid the typical problems of classical PPS systems as for example the turn-around time syndrome. Thereby newest algorithms and technologies are used, in order to set up improved plans. An important and substantial characteristic in contrast to classical PPS systems is thereby the obtained speed of the new calculations. A APS system is able to stop within shortest time new orders and to compute the effects to the entire production plan. Here efficient APS systems in a the position are to use actually limited resources optimally. On the other hand are applicable these systems with all usual PPS system.

High requirements of a APS system place themselves during variant-rich single and small-batch manufacturing. In particular mechanical engineering has to fight with high partial varieties among other things with frequent absence express situations when assembling and an unsatisfactory date loyalty. Here suitable APS systems must have efficient synchronisation and co-ordination characteristics, what requires again a high requirement to the assigned optimization algorithms. Only few APS systems carry out then however a simultaneous alignment of the materials availability.
