An advertising pillar is a notice column, on which posters can be stuck. It ranks among the range of the external advertisement.
It was invented by the citizen of Berlin printer Ernst Litfass (* 1816 in Berlin, " 1876 in Wiesbaden).
The idea to set up advertising pillars developed, in order to work against the game notice of posters, seizing at that time around itself. Litfass suggested to the authorities setting up everywhere in the city columns at which humans could attach their posters. After negotiations for many years the citizen of Berlin chief of the police Karl Ludwig von Hinkeldey Litfass gave on 5 December 1854 first permission for its "to Annocier columns ". He got until 1880 a valid monopoly on the list of these notice columns from the city Berlin. This happened however under the edition to fasten also the newest messages. In the year 1855 the first 100 advertising pillars in Berlin were set up and designated to the inventor in honours after it. In the year 1865 further 50 columns were set up. Both the authorities and the advertising customers recognized fast the advantages of the new advertising medium: From national side so a previous censorship of notices was possible. Advertising customers could rely on the fact that their posters would be also real to see for the entire rented time without pasting over.
While the war years 1870/71 the first war telegrams were published here. Advertising pillars had also the additional function as exchange or Transformatorenstation.
Today there are itself inward opening columns, which one calls Pillar. In the interior terminals or telephones are installed. These so-called city furniture continues with it the tradition of the function as direct service.
Before 150 years the created PR-means enjoys also today of still large popularity. At the end of of 2004 gave it according to data of the central association to the German advertising economy 17,055 advertising pillars in Germany.
Also after the new spelling regulations the word advertising pillar with ss is written, although a short vowel precedes this. This is because of the fact that it concerns with the first word component (Litfass) a name and the posting of names is not subject to the spelling regulations.
On the occasion of the of anniversary of the in the year 2005 a special stamp with the motive of the advertising pillar was presented.
