As an age man the chief of a guild is designated and/or in Northern Germany of an office.

The meeting of craftsmen or buyers in an office and/or a guild took place starting from the Middle Ages for the keeping of the own interests opposite the Herrschanden and for economic security. The age man was selected mostly and represented the guild outward.

Example of a protection of interests existing this very day is the Stralsunder Schiffercompagnie of 1488, which will represent this very day by its age man.

A further meaning of the word (in the mining industry) find under age man.
