The international airport Johannesburg (Johannesburg internationally air haven; ehem. January Smuts internationally air haven; IATA code: JNB; I.C.A.O. code: FAJS) is an international airport close Johannesburg in the Republic of South Africa. The surface of the airport amounts to 1,600 hectares.
The airport is the spider of the largest African airline South African Airways as well as numerous smaller societies.
The airport was built for 1952 as January Smuts airport close of the city Kempton park (East edge). In the same year the jet age was rung in here, as which the first commercial flight De Havilland DH 106 here, coming from the airport London Heathrow landed.
Johannesburg internationally air haven was also the test flight port for the design Concorde special during the 1970er years -, in order to judge the flight behavior with high-altitude airports. While the 1980er years have many countries the trade relations because of the apartheid blocked, so that a large number of airlines stop the operation of the airport.
After the system of government had changed 1994, the name was changed.
1996 became the airport concerning the flight movements at most frequented airport of the continent and replaced so the airport Cairo. 2002 was dispatched 12 million passengers (8% increase opposite 2001). In the year 2003 used 13.5 million passengers the airport (6% increase opposite 2002). The airport ranks among the 100 the world.
Since 2004 planned, a new Transiterminal between the national and international terminal is to be built.
Due to the altitude that is smaller oxygen content (this is particularly in the winter problematic). This has also effects on the flying operation. For a flight to New York town center with Boeing 747-400 or an airbus A340-600 must be between-landed in Lagos, Dakar or Ilha DO Sal for filling up, since the take-off weight with full tanks would be too high.
There are two bitumen runways lain parallel (in each case north south running and 3500 m long). Shortly a third runway is to be built, which these cross.
The airport is prepared for the flying operation for the sample of the airbus A380. Flights from and to Great Britain by British Airways (Boeing 747-400) are extremely frequent.
In the airport is also a museum of the airline South African Airways with many exhibits of aviation history.
Here also freight flights of the enterprises the air cargo, nearly air and Singapore airlines cargo are completed.
