Ala Littoria S.A. was the name of the national airline of fascist Italy.

History

Ala Littoria resulted in August 1934 from a fusion of the airlines accomplished under national direction

  • SAM - Aerea Mediterranea (gegr. 1926, in government property, in fact predecessor of the Ala Littoria)
  • Transadriatica (gegr. 1925, 1931 of SAM taken over)
  • SANA - Anonima di Navigazione Aerea (gegr. 1925)
  • SISA - Italiana Servizi Aerei (gegr. 1923)
  • AEI - Aero Espresso Italiano (gegr. 1923).

1935 took over Ala Littoria also the Adria aero Lloyd (Albania routes) and the north Africa Aviazione (gegr. 1931). The airline ALI (Aerolinee Italiane), belonging to the Fiat company, did not fall this pool process however to the victim.

Ala Littoria had an expanded European route network and flew also to the Italian colonial territories to north and East Africa. To airline services to South America it only 1939 came by the LATI (Linee Aeree Transcontinentali Italiane), although Italy within this range with Italo Balbo, Arturo Ferrarin, Francesco De Pinedo and other one had capable flight pioneers, who had flown repeated with partially larger airplane formations over the Atlantic and also to Asia and Australia.

During the Second World War the Italian military used up to fleet of the airline increased over 140 airplanes to air transport services. It was partly integrated completely into the Italian Air Force. Starting from 1946 Alitalia continued the work of the Ala Littoria as a flag carrier.

Name

The designation Ala Littoria sits down together from the Italian words ala (dt. "“Wings"”) and littorio (dt. "“Liktor"”). As again-German translation Fascist Wings could serve.
