ALARP is an English acronym and means As Low As Reasonably Practicable (as low, as reasonable way practicably).
ALARP is a principle of the risk reduction, and finds for example in the risk management application. The ALARP principle means that risks are to be reduced to a measure, which guarantees the highest degree at security, which is practicable reasonable way. This means for example that during the product development measures for identified product risks must be implemented even if they are practicable reasonable way (financially and/or technically at justifiable expenditure realizable).
The ALARP principle is used in the risk management. Within a risk management process assistance of a risk graph is specified, which risks within the acceptable range, which in the ALARP range and which lie in the inakzeptablen range. The classification of the risk graph effected usually project-specifically and presupposes, which the two parameters probability of entrance and extent of the damage are defined.
During a continuous risk management process existing risks are continuously supervised and evaluated, as well as identified new risks. On the basis an evaluation of the parameters probability of entrance and extent of the damage for each individual risk, a classification of the risk takes place in the risk graph. Risks, which lie in the inakzeptablen range, must be brought by risk-minimizing measures into the ALARP range. If this is not possible, then assistance of a risk use analysis is to be clarified whether the use which can be expected outweighs the risks.
