Alenia is an air and a space undertaking of the Italian Finmeccanica company. It resulted to at the beginning of the 1990er years from the fusion of the companies Aeritalia SpA and Selenia.
Aeritalia developed into the 1960er year from the aircraft construction section of the Fiat company. Fiat had built long time above all military aircraft, among them the light combat aircraft G.91, which was used also by the Federal Air Force in large number of items. The aircraft engine and ship turbine section of Fiats remained first under the designation "Fiat Avio "at the company, today belong it as "Avio "likewise to the Finmeccanica group. Aeritalia built among other things the Tornado, the light fighter-bomber AMX and also the transport aircraft G.222 (today Alenia C-27). In the civilian aircraft construction it was long time a subcontractor of McDonnell Douglas. For industrialpolitical reasons the national Italian airline Alitalia was therefore long years regular customer with McDonnell Douglas.
Selenia busy itself in particular with the ranges radar, sensors and avionics.
Alenia is today the backbone of the Finmeccanica company. In the military range it is involved in the building of the Eurofighter and Joint the Strike Fighters, in the civilian range manufactures it as Freelance both for Boeing and for airbus airplane components. Besides Alenia as well as the French Aerospatiale under the designation ATR builds regional airplanes and supplies also the company Dassault. The subsidiary "Officine Aeronavali Venezia "is specialized in airplane maintenance and the change from passenger to air freighters. Alenia could resume the successful work of Selenia and is today one of the prominent technical designers of radar and air traffic systems. Also in the rocket and space technology the enterprise positioned itself quite well.
