Sir Alexander Fleming (* 6 August 1881 in Lochfield with Darvel; "† 11. March 1955 in London), British bacteriologist and one the discoverer of penicillin.

Life

Fleming studied medicine at the pc. Mary's hospital Medical School in PAD thing clay/tone (London) starting from 1901. 1906 it locked its study, remained however further at Institut. Starting from 1921 he was deputy leader and starting from 1946 director of the institute, which was renamed 1948 in WRIGHT Fleming institute. From 1928 to 1948 it had the chair for bacteriology at the Londoner university.

Fleming discovered in September 1928 that a mold fungus had a germ-killing effect. This realization led later to the antibiotic penicillin.

For its discovery Fleming was often honoured. 1944 it was ennobled and one year later got it together with Florey and chain the Nobelpreis "“for the discovery of penicillin and its to welfare-end effect with different infections"”. He continued to be an honour doctor of 12 American and European universities, commander of the French Ehrenlegion and honour rector of the University of Edinburgh.

Fleming published further work over penicillin as well as over Lysozyme, which received however only little attention.

Fleming died at the 11. March 1955 in London at a cardiac infarct at the age of 73 years.

Fleming was Freimaurer, starting from 1925 masters of the chair of the Santa Maria Lodge NO 2692 and starting from 1936 the Misericordia Lodge NO 3286. 1942 became it a first large Schaffner of the united Grossloge of England and starting from 1948 their large custodian. Likewise it was member London Scottish Rifles Lodge NO 2319 and reached the 30. Degree of the old person and accepting Scottish rite.
