The Senderkette American Forces network (AFN) was created for the broadcast supply of the American soldiers in Europe.

Emergence

1942 decided the US war Ministry that a soldier radio should be furnished. It was created in the same year under the name AFRS (Armed Forces radio service) and would send on the Alaska niches island Kodiak. With the introduction of the television service it was renamed 1954 in AFRTS.

Europe

The AFN Europe is the European section of the US-American military broadcast services AFRTS (Armed Forces radio and Television service).

History

1940er

The first station would send under the name AFN London starting from 14 July 1943, 17:45 clock from BBC Studios in London, already 1944 came AFN Paris dazu.1945 began the transmit mode in May in Frankfurt/Main, first from a small truck, which behind the industrial union color building, for which American headquarters, stood. Already in June AFN Munich was added, which took up its transmit mode from the residents of Munich Kaulbachstrasse out and over two 100-kW-Sender with Munich and Stuttgart on the same frequency would send and so that covered the American zone to a large extent. In the August of the same yearly European headquarters was shifted from London to Frankfurt/Main. Stations in Nuremberg, Bremen and Berlin.Im December 1945 followed switched off AFN London, also all stations in France until 1948 were given up in short distances. Thus the number of the stations of 1945 was reduced still over 300 to scarcely 60 in the year 1949.Der AFN reported (live) from events like the war crimes trials or the citizen of Berlin was added AFN Stuttgart and AFN Bremen shifted somewhat more north and called themselves now AFN Bremerhaven.

1950er

The 1950er was the decade of the expansion of the network. 1950 became larger AFN Nuremberg with the removal in the Grand hotel. 1953 were added AFN Kaiserslautern, which sends starting from 1954 from Studios in the bird pain the Complex.

In May 1958 AFN France with start-up was reetabliert by AFN Orleans, in November was added AFN Poitiers, 1959 AFN Verdun. 1967, with the withdrawal of France from NATO switched AFN off France and shifted to Belgium to NATO headquarters SHAPE with Chievres as AFN SHAPE.

1960er, 1970er

1966 were shifted headquarters from that highest locks in Frankfurt/Main into a building placed from the hessian broadcast to the order particularly.

1980er

1980 came Studios into peppering castle and Soesterberg (NL) to the network. 1984 began the regular transmission of transmissions from AFRTS Studios in Kalifornien. In the Achtzigern 1989 became UKW transmitters additionally the outdated medium wave technology resemble year became Z-ROCK (starting from 1991: Z-FM) in the life called, a transmitter was cut to the younger listeners.

1990er, 2000er

With the troop reduction after the Gulf War in Europe also station locking had become inevitable. Thus the stations in Munich closed 1992, Bremerhaven 1993 as well as Berlin and Soesterberg 1994.AFN Stuttgart 1993 to Heidelberg were shifted and served since then both cities, in addition Mannheim.1995 went to AFN only mountain "“off air"” and shifted with the brand-new technology after Vilseck and is since then as AFN Bavaria in Vilseck and high rock to the transmitter in Augsburg was given up. Only in this year all stood world-wide under the name AFN! 2004 moved the European center of AFN from Frankfurt to Mannheim.

At the end of April 2006 the transmission concept for Europe again one changed. A basis block Sendemodel was introduced to the style of some Canadian radio stations, and/or continued to develop still. New name: "“AFN - The Eagle - Music Worth Fighting For"”. The European center in Mannheim produces now a basis program with transmission blocks and replaces with it the Z-FM programs. In this basis program are mixed different music directions, AFN transmissions and bought radio programs. Between these blocks the local AFN has radio stations of transmission blocks for itself, which can fill out her with respective own programs (e.g. local Morning shows and local Afternoon shows). This resembles the already past concept, was however now continued to develop. Popular transmissions like "“The Jonathan and Mary show"” (in former times also sent over the basis program of Mannheim) were taken out of the program. This new program adjustment has however its pro and cons. To the one it gave a quality increase within the range to music. On the other hand the individual local transmitters lost however at individuality. The earlier transmitter names (like e.g. "“HOT-FM"” for Heidelberg or "“The Big Gun"” for Bavaria) were void. All hot now directly: "“The Eagle"”. Thus also the old are partially with much love and joke produced radio station Jingles to a large extent disappeared.
