Starting from 1821 Smith was 16 years long stationed as an army surgeon in South Africa. In away Pitt, Chatham (Kent), it became 1837 medical director, 1845 then deputy inspector general. In the year 1853 Smith was appointed for 5 years the general manager of the Royal Army Medical department (British Medical services). In this long term of office Smith became an authority in the area of the Zoologie South Africa. In the year 1857 he was selected to the Fellow OF the Royal Society. For its earnings/services it was struck by queen Victoria Ith of Hanover (1819-1901) 1859 to the knight.

Smith was an author of the monumental work illustration OF the zoology OF South Africa. (1838-49). In the chapter Hippopotamus. it wrote over the retreat behavior of the river horse Hippopotamus amphibius (Linnaeus 1758). In the fact it recognized that before the Kolonialisierung of the cape by the Dutchmen the river horses seemed to good hope there everywhere in all larger rivers, whereas in the year 1849 all had disappeared there up to few isolated ones.
