Aretaios (* 80 or 81 in Kappadokien in small Asia, "† between 130 and 138 in Alexandria in Egypt) a Greek physician was in the antiquity.

It lived toward end of the government emperor Hadrians (117-138) in Alexandria. Close standing, he wrote a manual of the medicine with exemplary disease descriptions, among other things from Rachendiphtherie, to the Greek physician Hippokrates (460-370) leprosy, lung shrinking craze and Tetanus.

Aretaios is added to the pneumatics technicians. This were trailers of a medical direction of the antique ones, those in the breath (griech. Pneuma = breath, breath) the life principle saw. Aretaios imitated its large model Hippokrates, by using its ionischen dialect in anachronistischer way in its medical writings, which were with difficulty accessible thereby both for its contemporaries at that time, when they are also it for the today's scientists.

While a set of works (under it the surgery) was lost, are eight books concerning acute and chronic diseases with detailed discussion of etiology, thus the whole of the factors, which led to an existing illness, over their characteristics and therapy as well as over epilepsy, Manie and diabetes keep remained. In them becomes clear for this time an unusual sympathy for the patients.

Its representation of the disease pictures still applied in early 19. Century as exemplary.
