Originally the word infantryman describes the infantryman trained particularly in throwing shells. In the Second World War the infantry troop units in the armored divisions were then called armored infantry.
The list of armored infantry federations decreases/goes back on general Guderian, which is considered as the developers of the modern armored force. Its concept saw with forwards leading the armored units with the advance all necessary support also. In addition pioneers, artillery, repair belonged and evenly also to infantry. For the armored infantry to be concept planned further that these with a special armored vehicle, which armored infantry vehicles should be equipped, with which it up and served fight should.
Originally the armored infantry federations under the designation contactors and were assigned to the armored divisions and easy divisions. After the Poland campaign the easy divisions in Panzerdivisonen were reorganized, so that now all infantry federations were called contactors. On 5 July 1942 these were then renamed into armored infantry, independently of whether they had armored vehicles or not. Only about 25% of the armored infantry had in the process of the war armored vehicles. As weapon color 1943 meadow-green one specified. Some federations kept however from their history white (infantry) or yellow (Kavallerie). The weapon color of the armored infantry (and the armor branch generally) in the Austrian federal army is black.
Also today armored infantryman is the still valid name for one of the armored infantry vehicle from or to foot (served), accompanying the tank, infantry fighting soldiers. The armored infantry take over the task of the fight against infantry as well as by means of suitable antitank weapon against armored vehicles on the battleground. Special attention is thereby on the utilization of the area for the own advantage. A "sister branch of service" is the hunter troop, which is however purely designed for the infantry fight.
Armored infantryman is the name for the lowest crew rank in an armored infantry unit of the German Federal Armed Forces.
In the national People's Army (NVA) of the GDR Mot contactors were the usual name for the armored infantryman.
Within these troop units of the German Federal Armed Forces the following Reim became generally accepted jokeful: "It is not humans, it is no animal - it is an armored infantryman ".
The "battle call" of the armored infantry is a three-way of "armored infantry - to! Drauf! and for specific occasions loudly one speaks. The command prominent rank calls "armored infantry", what the begun troop with "to! Drauf! answered.
