The Atlantic transport LINE (ATL) was an US-American shipping company with head office in Baltimore. The ships were however in Great Britain registered. The enterprise operated a successful airline service on the North Atlantic between North America and Europe.

History

1883 created the American Berne pool of broadcasting corporations Baker the Atlantic transport LINE with seat in Baltimore around a freighter service to London to maintain. In order to exist in this business better, the ships in Great Britain were registered. The shareholders came however all from the USA. The ships were to be recognized easily by a red chimney with white volume underneath the dark-blue cap and the ship names began at the beginning with the Buckstaben S, later then with M.

The driven route ran at the beginning from Baltimore to London, starting from 1890 New York general starting port in North America and on the way to London could also Belfast or Swansea be started. The ships were mainly cargo ships with smaller or no passenger capacity, starting from 1900 also passenger liners with very large cargo capacity by the shipping company were only used. 1896 are bought up those national LINE by ATL and continued to operate to 1914.

1900 became the shipping company of the banker J.P. Morgan bought up and its IMMC Schifffahrtstrust attached. For ATL changed not much, one had however more moneys for the order and could strengthens new buildings in order to give. Up to the beginning of the 1. World war, in the year 1914, the society was one of the most important freighter lines on the transatlantic route. During the war the shipping company lost many of their ships and 1915 made also still IMMC the bankruptcy and turned out under trusteeship of the US Government.

After the war ATL with constant financial problems had to fight. From the former size not much had remained, for extensive new buildings was missing the money. Up to the world economic crisis came through the shipping company more badly than quite. 1931 were adjusted the passenger service and 1936 heard the Atlantic transport LINE insist on.
