The Austrian Lloyd (Italian Lloyd Austriaco) was the largest Austrian navigation company, which was created originally 1833 as insurance company. Seat of the enterprise was Triest, which was until 1918 part of Austria. Founders were among other things the Austrian politician Karl Ludwig von Bruck and the Triestiner banker Pasquale Revoltella.

History

A goal of the insurance company was it to supply dealers and ship carriers with current information about different markets and the maritime trade in Europe and Asia. The enterprise from a network of different Handelskorrespondenten and newspapers, which reached regularly the port of Triest, attained the information.

The information flow for the insurance company could be improved and the exclusive right to use of the information be ensured by its own fleet. When the enterprise replaced sailing boats starting from 1836 its by faster steam ships, in order information to keep still faster, it was engaged to take over the Postverkehr to lake for completely Austria Hungary.

In order to make a better information supply possible, the Austrian Lloyd introduced the division shipping, which became rapid the core business of the enterprise on 2 August 1836. Therefore this date is considered also as a year of the foundation of the enterprise. The first ship of the society appearing now as shipping company was "„the Arciduca Ludovico "“, which was purchased from England.

For the time being the navigation company was operated together with Hungary as Austrian-Hungarian Lloyd. Because of to high transport costs became Hamburg shipping companies even for the Mediterranean navigation a so large competition that the Austrian-Hungarian Lloyd wrote in the years 1889 and 1890 losses at a value of 440.000, and/or 60,000 guldens. When Austria increased therefore the subsidization, Hungary stepped out of the society, and supplied its past financial contribution in the future to the Hungarian navigation company "„Adria "“, which worked already profitable.
