Avro Canada was a Canadian airplane manufacturer, that admits for its innovative airplane constructions was. The exact company of the manufacturer read A.V. Roe Canada Ltd. The society developed in July 1945 as 100%ige daughter of the British manufacturer Avro, after this had bought the Canadian aircraft manufacturer Victory aircraft. In the course of the years the enterprise in several sections worked. In the year 1962 Avro Canadas British parent company was merged into the Hawker Siddeley group, so that Avro disappeared as a company. Hawker Siddeley sold thereupon nearly its entire Canada business.

Airplane section

This section (Avro aircraft) was only on establishment of the enterprise Avro Canada its. The factories were in mark clay/tone, a place not far from Toronto, Ontario.

After war production was stopped by airplanes, the main business of this section existed now in repair and maintenance of airplanes. Fast one decided to build new types of aircraft with jet propulsion. Potential customers of the airplanes were '' the Canadian Air Force (RCAF) '' or the Trans Canada airlines (TCA), the forerunner of the today's air Canada.

Avro Canada began therefore 1946 with the development of the military aircraft Avro Canada CF-100 '' Canuck '', a all-weathersuited interceptor. Although the construction of the hunter was to a large extent final already in the following year, it could not be built to at the end of of 1948 due to missing production mechanisms. The maturing process of the Canuck lasted thereafter again until 1952, the year of its setting into service with the RCAF. The hunter was superseded finally in the year 1981.

Parallel Avro Canada developed a jet-powered civil aircraft, the Avro Canada C-102 '' jet liners ''. This development project had to be given up however in favor of the advancement of the Canuck. In the year 1956 the only prototype of the airplane was scrapped.

Still before the official setting into service of the Canuck it became clear that need existed for a still more efficient fighter. This led to some Design studies of airplane samples with In May 1952 the Avro Canada CF-103 was finally suggested. Meanwhile no orders were received for this airplane, so that it remained only with the building of a test model.

In July 1953 the Canadian Ministry of Defense assigned Avro Canada to develop a hunter that should be cut particularly to the needs of the RCAF. This order led Arrow '', which conceptionally to the studies for the Avro Canada CF-103 could to the Avro Canada CF-105 '' fall back, however however more largely failed. A change of government led in February 1959 to the abrupt end of this project.

At 1958 Avro Canada with the research and development for a further project, which admits Avrocar under the designation Avro Canada VZ-9 '' '' became, began. It concerned thereby an airplane which saw similar in its form of a flying saucer. The two prototypes of the Avrocar could not however expectations fulfill, so that also this project had to be stopped in December 1961.

Engine section

In May 1946 Avro Canada acquired the company Turbo Research Ltd., which was busy originally with tests by jet engines of the RCAF. The location of this section was in Nobel, Ontario. At this time were the engines TR.4 Chinook (for the first time tested in March 1948) and TR.5 Orenda (for the first time tested in February 1949) in the development. The engine had such a success that one later used the name Orenda for this section. Orenda also today still is as mark in the market.

Further sections

In the context of diversifications further large sections were added in the course of the time. Main business field remained however further aviation.

  • Canadian Steel Improvement (1954). In this section alloys of all kinds were developed and produced.
  • Canadian Car & Foundry (1957). This section busy itself with the building of railroad cars, streetcars, tank cars and the like.
