In former times these were in many cases at the same time also manufacturers of aircraft engines, which however after beginning of the age of the jet aircraft in the 1950er years no more is practical the case.

Due to the complexity of modern airplanes airplane manufacturers employ highly-qualified coworkers. The qualification of the personnel extends apart from engineer and construction range also to the mechanical range and the electrical equipment. In ever stronger measures also software experts are necessary, in order to deliver a modern airplane airworthily.

Large airplane manufacturers employ partly more than 30,000 coworkers. Of these manufacturers a whole net at suppliers is dependent, which supply components for the aircraft construction. The large airplane manufacturers Boeing and Airbus assign ever more subranges at suppliers, and require with new developments also their participation in the financial risk.

Already Otto Lilienthal sold some the glider developed by it. First commercially successful airplane manufacturer was Louis which could sell about 100 machines of its type Bleriot XI starting from the year 1909.

In the Soviet Union airplane manufacturer from OKB (experimental design engineering department) developed, which is designated after their chief designer.
