Biography

Baruj Benacerraf was born 1920 as a son of parents in Caracas in Venezuela, spent however his youth from 1925 to 1939 in Paris and visited here the Janson. Its father was a wealthy carpet dealer.

1939 drew the family to New York town center, where Baruj denied its study of the medicine until 1942 to the Columbia University. The further study took place until 1945 at the Medical college OF Virginia in Richmond, after it became 1943 US-American citizen. it attained a doctorate to 1945 here and became only Assistenzarzt to New Yorker Queens hospitals, later in the military hospital in Nancy in France. After the military it began its research in the minkrobiologischen faculty of the Columbia University.

1956 were adjusted Benacerraf as an extraordinary professor for comparative pathology at the University of New York, 1960 were converted this place into a tidy Professur. 1970 took place its appointment to the chair of the same subject to Harvard University in Boston, where he was active up to its retirement.

Work

Baruj Benacerraf and its both colleagues distinguished with it concerned themselves considerably with the immunological compatibility from fabrics to transplant ions. Benacerraf, Snell and Dausset could prove in their experiments that these immune factors are genetically fixed. They are considerably responsible for the fact that it is experimentally possible to examine these factors since they could prove that itself also on the white blood corpuscles, the leukocytes, which find same factors as with other body cells. Thus an immune factor system could be developed, which can function similarly to the systems of group of bloods and be already accomplished with that defence reactions by tests with patient blood.
