Breath knee (also pneumatophores, lat. Pneumatophoren) designation strong root excrescences with some tree species of the family of the which stand out upright (negatively gravitrop) from the soil or from the water surface and umknicken again downward then.

Breath knees occur mainly with trees in Sumpfgebieten; it is therefore accepted that they serve the gas exchange and/or the oxygen supply of the roots with their aeration fabric. In addition, a further possible function is the stabilization of the tree on swampy, unstable reason.

The following kinds train breath knees:

  • Upright Sumpfzypresse
  • China Zypresse
  • Genuine Sumpfzypresse
