Bulb, also Bulbus, is substantially the plants numerous from fleshy thickened formed, lowest, usually also underground part, (e.g. the lily plants or bulb plants).

Structure

Buds enclosed by several bowls (derived memory sheets) are typical. The sheets, from which the bulb is compound, are called bulb sheds or Zwiebelschalen and are on the sheath part reduced The thin outer skin (=Zwiebeldecke), which the bulb from the environment against drainage protects, is usually thin and drying and gives depending upon their shape of the bulb soon a flaky, soon a shelled reputation. The inside, are always juicy, thick and fleshy due to strong development of their Parenchyms. It form therefore bulk bulb, while the stack part, to which everything these sheets sit, is extremely shortened and appears on the longitudinal average in the reason of the bulb as a depressed, nearly disk-shaped part. This bulb disk (bulb cake) drives the simple Nebenwurzeln at its edge, underneath the outermost bulb covers, into the soil, while a stake root is missing, so that the lower surface of the bulb disk is smooth. Inside the bulb the bud of the or the basis of the same, if it is already out-driven, is as direct continuation of the bulb disk.

Function

With plants, which possess a bulb, this out-grew the wintering part from which in the spring of the with the In the time starting from the introduction of the plant the bulb of reserve materials, in particular strength, stores in itself and makes these available in the spring newdrove out.

Bulbs as organorgan organs

In the shoulders of the bulb sheds buds can develop, which are formed again in the form of bulbs. One calls the same Brutzwiebeln, because they separate sooner or later from the nut/mother bulb and serve for the Vermehrung of the bulb.

Achselbulbillen

In some cases also a formation of bulbs in the shoulder of or in the bloom conditions comes forwards (e.g. with the tiger lily); this suctions. Brutzwiebeln are likewise organorgan organs.

Bulbs as food

Bulbs are predominantly poisonous or at least very unwholesome as protection from eating damage for many mammals (thus also humans). Exceptions form only special breeding - the food bulbs - which are innocuous for humans, not however for other mammals. For dogs food bulbs e.g. represent a serious problem, the common Unsitte to give dogs of remainders of a lunch can for the dog with high Zwiebelhaltigkeit of the meal be harmful and to symptoms of intoxication lead.
