Bulk material is according to definition of the United Nations each cargo, which offers itself due to its even physical character for Massengutumschlag and transport. A further definition is special for the maritime range. From this bulk material is each charge, which is transported in large quantities, normally an entire cargo. According to this definition are e.g. also bananas, automobiles, alive animals or trunks bulk material, if they take an entire or at least the largest part of a cargo.

One can divide bulk goods in two categories:

1. Liquid bulk cargo such as oil, liquid gas, liquefied natural gas, and liquid products of oil
2. Even bulk cargo in more (as ore, coal, bauxite phosphate, cement, grain) or in form (like trunks, paper, automobiles or steel).
