Originally the American Arithmometer company sold invented adding machines in of pc. Louis von William Seward Burroughs. After its removal to Detroit in the year 1904 their name was changed after the inventor in Burroughs Adding Machine company. Burroughs died 1898. Burroughs were then manufactured to the largest manufacturer of adding machines in the USA, in the 50's also typewriter and calculating machine.

1953 were renamed the Burroughs Adding Machine company in Burroughs corporation and began, after the purchase of the ElectoData in Pasadena, California, with the production of computers for banks. The first product was the computer B205 tube. Burroughs had world-wide addresses, in Germany the Burroughs GmbH.

On the basis of the mechanical computers in connection with electronic circuits reservation and account automats were developed, which found under the name "“Sensimatic"” in Germany entrance with many banks as voucher processing and document handling automat. A special category were the magnetic ledger accountng machines.

Burroughs developed three high-innovative Mainframe computer architectures.

  • The Burroughs Large of system machines with the B5000 (1961) was stack computers in Extended the ALGOL 60 was programmed. Their operating system, which was MCP (master control Program) in ESPOL (Executive of system Programming Oriented LANGUAGE, a slight extension of ALGOL) programmed, about 10 years before the development of Unix. For the command interface (COMMAND interface) existed a structured, compilable language with procedures, which WFL (Work flow LANGUAGE) was called.
  • The Burroughs B2000 (medium of system) aimed with priority at the commercial market. They were sketched particularly for the execution by COBOL programs. In addition a unit for BCD (Binary Coded decimal) belonged to arithmetic operations for stores and addresses in main storage with basis 10-operations instead of Binary.
  • The Burroughs B1700 (Small of system) was microprogrammed, whereby each process potentially received its own virtual machine.

Burroughs corporation was like probably not technological from the size, always eternal second after IBM. It was in the 60's one of the eight computer companies (with IBM of the largest, Honeywell, Scientific DATA of system, control DATA corporation, General Electric, RCA and UNIVAC). This group under the name BUNCH became later - (Burroughs, UNIVAC, NCR, control DATA corporation, and Honeywell) admits.

In September 1986 the Burroughs corporation merged with the SPERRY corporation under the new name Unisys corporation.
