Burroughs Wellcome & company was created 1880 in London (UK). Establishment fathers were the two Pharmazeuten Henry Wellcome and Silas Burroughs, both from the USA. The society is in the meantime into the GlaxoSmithKline come up.

Burroughs Wellcome & company played an important role with the development of Zidovudin (Retrovir), a medicine material, which limits the propagation of the rear virus.

1988 were lent the Nobelpreis for medicine at Dr. Gertrude Elion and Dr. George Hitchings, both to coworkers of Burroughs Wellcome & company.
