A bottle is a container to transport and for the storage of liquids and gases. It consists mostly of glass, plastic or metal.

Most bottles have a relatively small diameter, a flat soil in relation to their height and upward more narrowly and will end in will round, by means of cover lockable opening.

One differentiates between weithals and close neck bottles. With close neck bottles the diameter of the opening is clearly smaller than the average inside diameter of the depository; the usual outside diameter of the neck with beverage bottles with screw-type cap amounts to 25mm.

Most frequently in bottles beverages are kept. The bottle protects the beverage against the penetration of foreign matter and against evaporation. Many bottles consist of sounded material, in order to shield the sun exposure, in particular UV jets.

In principle one differentiates between returnable bottles and non-returnable bottles.

  • Returnable bottles are to be returned after emptying at the and again be filled after an extensive cleaning. Such bottles are occupied with the purchase with a pledge, which is to prevent that the consumer from comfort supplies the bottle to the remainder garbage. Returnable bottles are usually sold in beverage crates, in which for example 6, 12, 20 or 24 bottles are located. In Germany Bierflaschen have usually a pledge of 8 cent, all other bottles and Bierflaschen with handle a pledge of 15 cent. In addition also on the beverage crate a pledge is raised. Whether or appropriate filling up he federations (e.g. the cooperative of German wells (GDB)) Owners remain legally disputed, are; the question is to be affirmed after the iurisdiction probably if the bottles are only lent and the also actually only own bottles to take back - which will have to be answered in the negative however with the cancelling without opposition of mixed empties by All returnable bottles can be returned in principle with each dealer, who sells a mark in this bottle. In the meantime by the cooperative mainly PET bottles are spent, are used before it Glasflaschen.
  • Non-returnable bottles consist in the meantime mostly of PET, more rarely of glass. They are supplied to the valuable material recycling after emptying, as a rule over the Vertreiber and manufacturers, partly also in waste glass containers. The glass or PET is melted then usually husbands and, in order to convert it to new bottles or other products. Since 2003 are raised in Germany also on most non-returnable bottles a pledge (see dose pledge). This is justified with of the Federal Office for Environment Protection, which came in the end that non-returnable bottles fare despite recycling clearly more badly than glass and PET returnable bottles; however also the opinion is held that non-returnable bottles are actually ecologically more favorable because of shorter empties routes of transportation (no return motion up to the and because of the polluting cleaning which is omitted here, which is necessary with returnable bottles before renewed filling. Non-returnable bottles are sold individually, into beverage crates, welded into foil to 6 or 8 bottles or in a sticking carrier.

Beside beverage bottles there are bottles, which contain cleaning agents, oils, fats or fuels. In addition gas is often kept in gas bottles. These consist of metal, since the gas is on the inside at high pressure. Gas bottles are usually pledge-occupied returnable bottles. They are used for highly compressed technical gases, in addition, e.g. for liquid gas in campers and for grills.

The points at the lower edge of some bottles are a code, which permits conclusions on the press form.

The down-German expression for bottle is digs.
