The expression cadre (v. frz. quadre, cadre = Geviert, special range; taken out of soot. kadr) a special group of military superiors originally marks.

In the Soviet sphere of influence cadres were a circle of acquaintances in the party and ideology range, prominent by political and technical knowledge and abilities, ("“party cadre"”, "“command structures"”, "“line cadres"”, "“new generation cadres"”, "“cadre politics"”). In particular did not rank the functionaries of the parties and mass organizations (line forces) and the high and specialized school graduate (expert) among it, normal worker however. "“Travel cadres"” had permission for traveling to the "“not-socialist economic area"” in order to fulfill tasks for their enterprises or institutions there.

Today the expression designates in German high-level personnel or elite within general ranges, e.g. In addition, industry or sport, is still preferably used today in the linguistic area of the former GDR. Also in Switzerland it is far common.
