Captain second lieutenant designates a soldier in the third-lowest officer rank in Germany with the German Federal Armed Forces within the German navy. In the other armed services this rank is called captain. In the medical service of the German Federal Armed Forces are medical officer, staff pharmacists and staff veterinarian. Correspondence at the civilian police is e.g. the 1. Police main commissioner, generally in bureaucracy the highest office of the elevated service.

The captain second lieutenant is shortened in numerous forms: KptLtn., Kaleu, KaLeu, Kaleun or Kaleunt. In the German Federal Armed Forces there are two variants:

• KptLt (long form, bspw. with instructions)
• KL (short form, only with lists related)

Soldiers in this rank can give crews, NCOs without Portepee, within the borders set by the superior regulation (VorgV) NCOs with Portepee and second lieutenants of instructions.
