The career principle belongs to the brought principles of the civil service with tenure in accordance with kind 33 exp. 5 GG.

A legal definition is in "§ 2 exp. 2 of the federal career regulation (BLV). Afterwards a career covers all offices the same field, which the the same pre and training require (e.g. Elevated service: Abitur and specialized university education, higher one service: Abitur and university conclusion). Careers of different fields (like e.g. general non-technical service, technical service, police service etc.), which the same conditions for entrance have, into the so-called groups of careers are combined.

Apart from the general careers with period of instruction there are still the careers of special field without period of instruction.

It is colloquial a synonym to career.
