The central market Riga (lett. Rigas Centraltirgus) is the largest food market of Latvia and applied in the 30's 20. Century as the largest and most modern market of Europe.

History

Already in the year 1910 a branch was planned by the central station of the railway toward Rigaer city channel, at which at the time at that time the "“red memory"” was with a food market.

After the First World War the hygenic conditions on the food market should be profoundly improved. The bank at the city channel and to, as well as the market area in the First World War strong damages had suffered and should so with the establishment of the central market the area back in order be brought.

After on 28 December 1922 the Rigaer town councillor had seized the resolution for the reconstruction of the market, the two airship hangars from the airship port Wainoden in of the government were bought. From structural reasons and hygenic requirements here of resounding only the upper parts were used.

The construction work began in June 1924 with the clearing away of the "“red memory"”. In the course of the construction work various changes of the original project resulted, whereby the building was interrupted in the year 1926 and only 1928 could be continued again. On 2 November 1930 the food market with a service could be handed over.

Since 1995 the market is led as a 100 percent AG of the Rigaer of town councillor. The central market employs 253 employees and offers a total area of 72.300 m

Technical data

Altogether from the two airship hangars, of which everyone had originally a length of 240 m, five market halls were established. A larger in eastnortheast adjustment with a length of approximately 140 meters and a surface of 5.000 m for the wholesale and the meat processing, as well as 4 smaller resounding in southsoutheast direction with a length of approximately 70 meters and about 2,500 m for meat products, for milk and meat products, for bread, fruit and vegetable as well as poultry and for fish.

Meanwhile the entire surface of the central market amounts to 5.7 hectars, about which 1.6 hectars are considered. The building of the market cost the city at that time over 5.000.000 Lats.

The resounding use is distributed since 1995 according to the following pattern:

  • Vegetable
  • Milk
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Catering trade

Sales development

After the opening in the year 1930 the central market became the largest place of transshipment for food of all kinds. The farmers sold their products in the new, bright and clean market more cheaply, than in comparable shops. In the year 1931 on altogether 41,000 m goods were sold to surface with an annual turnover by approximately 750,000 Lats

With the abolishment of the wholesale and the nationalization of the agriculture during the affiliation to the Soviet Union however the prices rose and were higher than in the shops. Farmers were allowed to only sell own products outside of that to resounding.

Since the regaining to the independence of Latvia now also here free trade and the market prevail offer all products into resounding and also on the open spaces again for cheaper prices, than in appropriate shops.

In the year 2001 products on a total area were sold by 72.300 m for altogether 4.6 million Lats.
