CART (Championship car Racing team Inc.) was an US-American author sport organization, which aligned the formula running series for the Champ Cars from 1979 to 2003.
CART is often used as synonym for the Champ Car series. That is however only conditionally correct. The CART organization organized still further running series of other classes (Indy Lights (before times American Racing Series), Toyota Atlantic Championship, Trans TO the Series, the Barber Dodge pro Series and the Formula BMW). The mistake comes off probably thereby because the Champ Car series due to the close linkage with its aligner, which was called CART, long Indy Car (CART) Series. The official designation was starting from 1979 PPG Indy Car World Series. 1998 were called the series officially PPG CART World Series. PPG stands for the main sponsor at that time PPG Industries.
CART was created 1979 by Dan Gurney, Pat Patrick and Roger Penske, in order to make a democratic and flexible organization possible of formula racing in the United States, since the past organization did not run by the US automobile club USAC at this time satisfyingly. Particularly the safety aspect had been neglected of the USAC.
The CART did not succeed it in the 1980ern and 1990ern to stabilize the running series sufficiently and bring the groups of interests together. There most important running of the season, which lost Indy 500, at the beginning of the 1990er years in the Champ Car series ever more at meaning (above all because ever more running on road courses to the running calendar were taken up), created the Indianapolis engine Speedway in the middle of the 1990er years an own series in competition to the Champ Cars, the Indy Racing League (since 2003 IRL IndyCar Series). By the establishment US formula racing maneuvered itself even into the heaviest crisis of its history. The CART and the IRL could not settle their disputes despite repeated discussions over a combination of the two series. The hard competition around the outrider shank in the close US-American formula sport market the CART at the end of forced 2003 into the knees. It could not bankruptcy the financial loads any longer lift and had announce. A group of team owners bought the majority of the CART as open Wheel Racing Series (OWRS) and resumes the Champ Car World Series and the other running series than direct successor organization.
