Christian young (* 17 September 1956) is a German Pflanzengenetiker and molecular biologist. It received the Gottfried William Leibniz price for its research, endowed with 1.55 million euro, to 2005 for breeding parasit-resistant plants.

Biography

Christian young was born 1956 in Northeim, where he visited and with the Abitur locked the primary school between 1962 and 1966 and between 1966 and 1975 the High School. Afterwards it completed its military service and began 1976 its study of the agrarian sciences in Goettingen. In the years from 1977 to 1979 it completed altogether nine months practical courses in agrarianeconomical enterprises in Germany and Canada and it terminated 1981 its study with a thesis (diploma) about "“proof of the nitrogen adjustment with two trunks of the hydrogen bacterium Alcaligenes latus"” under his professor Schlegel.

From 1981 to 1984 it was active at Institut for crop farming and plant breeding in Goettingen, where he was from 1982 to 1984 scientific coworker. It attained a doctorate here 1984 under the title "“own contribution and interactions of rye and Weizengenomen in Triticale"” under professor From 1984 to 1986 he was a scientific assistant at the chair for applied genetics at the University of Hanover and from 1987 to 1992 academic advice on time at the university in Munich. The Habilitation took place 1992 under professor Herrmann about "“molecular Genomanalyse with useful plants. After its Habilitation was he for nearly one year private lecturer and upper assistant in Munich and since 1993 is he a professor and director at Institut for crop farming and plant breeding of the Christian Albrechts university in Kiel.

Work

The Forschungsgebiet of Christian young lies in the range of the molecular breeding research and in the development of parasit-resistant useful plants. In the context of a community project with other scientists, a resistance gene succeeded to it for the first time against thread worms from carrots klonieren. However the scientific proof for the function of this gene in sugar beet until today is pending. Also the molecular sex regulation of the plants represents a work area of Christian young.

Memberships and activities

  • 1993 to 2000: Deputy member of the centers commission for biological security (ZKBS)
  • 1997 to 1999: Deputy chairmen of the commission of the Schleswig Holsteini federal state parliament "“chances and risks of the genetic engineering
  • Member of the DFG senate committee for the evaluation of materials in the agriculture (SKLW)
  • Publisher of the technical periodical "“plans Breeding
  • 2000 - 2004 member of the Scientific Coordinating Commitee of the national Pflangenomprojektes GABI
