Christiane Volhard (* 20 October 1942 in Magdeburg) is a German Biologin. It concerns itself with genetics and development biology and is since 1985 chief of the institute for Max-Planck for development biology in and also chief of the genetic department. It received the Nobelpreis for medicine and physiology for its research to 1995 over genetic control of the early Embryonalentwicklung.

Life

Christiane Volhard was born on 20 October 1942 in Magdeburg as the second of five children. Her father Rolf volume hard was an architect, her nut/mother Brigitte Haas Their youth spent it in the house of its grandfather, a heart and kidney specialist, close Frankfurt/Main, where their family had looked for refuge for the war. It was interested already early in plants and animals and known already at the age from 12 years that it wanted to become Biologin. Affected by Konrad the Lorenz and other behavior researchers held it to the Abitur celebration a paper on the "“language with animals"”. After the Abitur at the Schiller High School in Frankfurt began to study it 1962 biology at the Goethe university in Frankfurt. 1964 changed it to the biochemistry study to the Eberhard Karl university Christiane Volhard was married from 1967 to 1977 with the physicist Volker The childless marriage became 1977 divorced. Their diploma in biochemistry attained it in 1968, and was of 1969 to scientific woman employee at the "„institute for Max-Planck for virus research "“. The graduation to "„the doctor of the natural science "“took place at the University of (1973) in the subject genetics. Whereupon a Postdoc with a research scholarship 1975/1976 at the laboratory of professor Walter Jakob going ring in "„the bio center Basel "“and 1977 followed was it as Stipendiatin "„of the German research council "“(DFG) at the laboratory insect-embryo-lied professor Klaus Sander at the University of Freiburg/mash gau.

From 1978 to 1980 it functioned as a research group leader at the again developed "„European molecular-biological laboratory "“(EMBL) in Heidelberg. There she co-operated with Eric Wieschaus, with which she received the Nobelpreis later. Finally afterwards it was new generation group leader at the Friedrich Miescher laboratory of the Max-Planck company in (1981-1984) and directress and scientific member at the institute for Max-Planck for development biology in where Christiane Volhard is active since 1985. Followed guest training orders to "„the Harvard Medical School "“Harvard University (1988, 1991), the Yale University (1989), the Rockefeller University in New York (1991) and the Indiana University (1994). At the university it holds a Honorarprofessur since 1991.

It received the Nobelpreis for medicine and physiology as well as Eric Wieschaus and Edward B. Lewis for their research to 1995 over the genetic controlling of the Embryonalentwicklung. Christiane Volhard and Eric Wieschaus identified and systematized genes, which steer the plant of the body plan and the segments in the egg of the baptizing couch ("„Drosophila more melanogaster "“). It developed the gradient theory, which represents, as by material gradients in the Eizelle and the embryo the Genexpression is steered and pointed parallels out in the Embryonalentwicklung between insects and vertebrate animals. After the insects later the Zebrafisch ("„Brachydanio rerio "“) became than first vertebrate animal the preferential the subject of the development-biological work of Christiane created Christiane Volhard as well as the manager of many years the Bavarian AG, Peter Stadler, and Cologne Genetiker the Klaus Rajewsky a company for biotechnology named "„Artemis Pharmaceuticals GmbH "“. This company is specialized in the development of genetically manufactured medicines and aims at medium-term the stock exchange course. Since 2001 Christiane Volhard is also member in the national ethics advice.
