It was opened on 1 October 1984, after it had been provided in cover building method, in order to disturb surface traffic as few ones as possible. The station of Rainer G. possesses almost monumental dimensions. Thus it possesses two central platforms, whereby the U7 holds at the interior tracks; the external tracks are at present unused. At the end of the station are galleries, by which the passengers arrive at the surface. From there one can grasp the entire station. The U-Bahnhof contains likewise the signal tower for the distance to Paulsternstrasse.

The station is already prepared for the admission of a planned extension of the underground line 2, which leads at present only up to the U-Bahnhof resting life. This line is to hold after the plans at this station at the outer orbit pastes, however in the left-hand traffic - this would be unique with the citizens of Berlin underground. When and whether this extension is however built, is not to be foreseen yet. Likewise yet to foresee the planned extensions of the U7 are not until Staaken and the U2 in the Falkenhagener field.

Although the station lies in direct proximity to the rapid-transit railway yard Spandau, it maintained its name. Thus it that Buslinien that are always proven Federal Constitutional Court with the designation S+U Spandau, comes the rapid-transit railway yard against it only with S Spandau.
