Cleaner Production designates taking precautions, operatingspecific environmental protection. By the analysis of operational material and energy flows one tries to work starting points out for in-plant improvement measures in industriellen processes (energy and material flow management, flow of material analysis). Organizational and technical improvements are to help to use raw materials and energy flows as well as possible and wastes, waste water, to avoid exhaust gases. It concerns for example the following measures: Documentation of consumption, characteristic numbers formation and Controlling, purposeful selection of raw and auxiliary materials, particularly biogenous raw materials and source of energy, service life extension of auxiliary materials and process baths, improved regulation and automation, re-use of wastes, new, waste-poor procedures and technologies.

In Austria 1992 a Cleaner Production initiative were started by the BMVIT (Federal Ministry for traffic, innovation and technology). This led to the initiatives Prepare and . In Germany the initiative PIUS since 1999 (production-integrated environmental protection) exists. UNIDO (United nation Industrial development Organization) operates since 1994 national a Cleaner Production center program with centers in central and South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
