Colonel general was later the designation of highest regularly attainable general rank in the Prussian army, also in the contingent army of the Kaiser era, in the realm resistance and in the army and the Air Force of the armed forces. Only the general field marshal still ranked over him. In the armed forces the general admiral corresponded to the colonel general in the war navy. 1940 ago it gave still the special stage "„to colonel general with rank as a general field marshal "“. This rank was lent if a colonel general in times of peace should be carried, which was however not possible, because general field marshals were appointed usually only in the war.

In the national People's Army of the GDR the colonel general was second highest regular rank after the army general.

Since the German Federal Armed Forces oriented themselves in its general ranks at the United States, the rank of a general corresponds to that of an general-upper.

Even in further armies world-wide the colonel general corresponds to the general, so for example in slawischen states, where the sequence similarly the old German system major general - lieutenant general - colonel general (general polkovnik) - army general reads.
