Commander is in Germany a staff officer rank of the German navy. This rank corresponds to that of the lieutenant colonel in other armed services of the German German Federal Armed Forces. In the medical service of the German Federal Armed Forces are the flotilla physician/upper field physician, the flotilla pharmacist/upper field pharmacist and the upper field veterinarian. The rank insignias of the commander consist gold-yellow strips of 3 and an intermediate strip between (highest) the 1. and that 2. Strip (colloquial: three and a half piston rings), which are carried on both undersleeves of the service jacket. The cap screen shows a row oak leaves embroidery. Paying takes place depending upon utility position either after A 14 or A 15 BBO.
Soldiers in this rank can give crews, NCOs without Portepee, NCOs with Portepee, within the borders set by the superior regulation (VorgV) second lieutenants, captain second lieutenants and lieutenant commanders of instructions.
In NATO the lieutenant colonel has "the climbing code "OF-4. The English designation reads "lieutenant Colonel ", at the navy "COMM other ".
In the People's Navy of the GDR the rank of the commander was the middle rank in the group of the staff officers. Similar to the German navy the sequence lieutenant commander - commander - was a captain to sea.
