Of computer Assisted personnel Interviewing one speaks, if an interviewer with a Notebook computer, on which the questionnaire program runs, which visits person who can be asked and goes through then with it together the questionnaire at the screen. It makes with the fact no difference technical whether the interviewer places the questions and enters the answers or whether the screen regarded and the keyboard uses the person who can be asked.
Most CAPI systems are variants or descendants of CATI systems. The following system components can be differentiated:
- The programming environment for the questionnaire and the run time system for its execution in the interview: These system parts are usually identical to those for CATI application, because it does not make a difference whether the computer stands in the Telefonstudio or on a table between to asking and the interviewer.
- The address administration: While with CATI systems the addresses of a project are central administered, the address existence must be divided for example after regional criteria first into packages with CAPI systems, which are then handed over to different interviewers. The address administration supports the allocation of the addresses, their dispatch to the interviewers (usually by means of file transfer or as E-Mail-Attachments), the regular, e.g. daily retrocession of the addresses with the respective completion status and of them brought together and evaluation during the central project management. Together with the addresses with the endaround carry also the raised data are dispatched.
- Project statistics: Characteristic numbers the status of the different projects are prepared in table and Chartform.
- Language support: This component supports the transmission of the questionnaire into another questioning language.
The components to the project statistics and for language support are frequently identical in CATI, CAPI and also in Web-based questioning systems.
