The Continental AG (short Conti) is a German enterprise with head office in Hanover. It has the legal form of a corporation. Chairman of the board is since 11 September 2001 Manfred Wennemer. The enterprise is in Germany market leader in tire production, makes however in the meantime more conversion than automobile suppliers of driving safety technology (among other things ESP).

The ContiTech range strengthened with the 2004 admits given assumption of the Phoenix AG.

Production

Tire

The Continental AG is after Michelin, Bridgestone and Goodyear the fourth largest tire manufacturer of the world. The division passenger car tire (Europe) covers the marks Continental, Uniroyal, Semperit, Barum, general Tire, Euzkadi, Viking, Gislaved and Mabor. Further a whole set of private ones of fire are manufactured e.g. for tire wholesale dealers. With effect to 01 November 2004 it sold the division "“agricultural tire"” to the Czech CGS group (Czech Rubber Group).

In the 1980-he 1980 Continental transferred the tire company Semperit in the down-Austrian Traiskirchen and thus their subsidiaries in Slovenia Sava and in Tschechien. In the year 2002 however tire production from Traiskirchen was shifted completely to Tschechien. Today there is only a production for rubber mixtures, which is to be stopped in addition. Originally the whole work wanted to buy in Traiskirchen the Austrian Industrielle Mirko Kovats. Since however Continental did not want to along-sell the trademark laws of the name Semperit, nothing became from the Deal.

Driving safety

Starting from 1995 the division "“CAS"” (Continental of automotives of system) was established. It concerns electronically steered chassis - and vehicle safety systems (e.g. with brakes, tire pressure, Fahrerassistenzsystem, ESP). Here the enterprise has comprehensive authority within the ranges driving safety, drive and comfort as technology partner of the automobile industry leading world-wide. With the acquisition of the brake manufacturer Alfred Teves GmbH 1998 with seat in Frankfurt/Main, which was repelled at the time of the American CCIT automotives, and the automotive electronics manufacturer Temic in Nuremberg (2001 of DaimlerChrysler taken over) this division exceeds tire production and became the largest support leg of the enterprise. 2004 lay the portion of the entire company conversion with approximately 40 per cent.

Marks of the division CAS (Continental of automotives of system):

  • Ate (= " Alfred Teves ", Aftermarket, vehicle spare parts)
  • Temic (chassis electronics, engine management, transmission price increase)
  • Teves (braking, stabilities and chassis monitoring systems)

Bosch and Continental have high portions of the world market for ESP systems.

Restructuring and work locking

On 4 August 2004 the German tire producer affirmed Continental in the course of his turnover report that he intends to stop the tire manufacturing by restructuring measures despite in the rest of favorable prognoses in the US work Mayfield in Kentucky to the year end for indefinite time. In November 2004 the company mentioned that it could further develop their prominent market position in the USA with electronic stability control systems (ESP) for cars. After the large car manufacturers from Detroit had announced to equip nearly all new models in series with this safety equipment Continental can probably double the distribution of ESP systems in the USA 2005.

Inland

2005 came it in the section passenger car tire production to an unexpectedly small growth. Thereupon the chairman of the board communicated Manfred Wennemer on 22 November 2005 to stop the production of passenger car tires in the parent plant Hanover sticks to the year end 2006 despite profitability. Thus 320 coworkers lose their job. This led to protests on the part of the staff. On 6 December 2005 for the first time an operating plenary assembly of all took place in Germany employed coworkers at 26 locations in the history of the Continental AG. Here the workers' delegates demanded the withdrawal of the announced work locking. On 23 January 2006 it came to a renewed action day of the persons employed with a demonstration before the enterprise center into Hanover. One day later with a meeting by management, work council and trade union was obtained a compromise (locking only at the end of of 2007), which is not however yet finally negotiated and decided.

Foreign country

There was work locking in past years already in Gislaved (Sweden), Herstal (Belgium) and Traiskirchen (Austria). A conflict around a work locking in the Mexican Guadalajara was settled only at the beginning of of 2005, smoldering since 1998. Continental took over at that time the Mexican tire company Euzkadi and closed the enterprise 2001 surprisingly after long lasting controversies with the Euzkadi management and the trade union agency at work time extensions and wage cuts. About 1,100 workers became to dismiss. They prevented a work disassembly by strike pickets. Although the locking was explained temporarily by Mexican Federal Labor Court for illegal and/or the strike for legal, it only at the beginning of of 2005 came to a solution of the conflict. With the help of the Mexican government took over the workers the work to 50 per cent
