Cost of living is the costs, which must be applied by a household, in order to deny the life.

For the determination of the cost of living the Federal Statistical Office uses a Warenkorb in such a way specified. This contains the consumer habits an average household with four persons. Apart from the respective goods and their quality also on the average the quantities bought in one time period (usually one month) are important (weighing number). From the goods and with their quantities "„weighed "“goods prices (weighed average of the goods prices) the monthly cost of living is determined.

Among them for example the expenditure for rent, heating, river, food, shoes, telephone and mobility falls.
