Countering admiral (French: contre amiral = "Gegenadmiral") is the third-highest of four admiral ranks of the German Federal Armed Forces.
In the armed forces countering admiral designated the lowest admiral rank, which carries the designation now in the German navy flotilla admiral. The countering admiral ranked thus between Vice Admiral and flotilla admiral, corresponds to the major general at the army.
The countering admiral was in the People's Navy of the GDR the lowest rank in admiral rank. It corresponded to the major general at the ground forces.
The designation countering admiral decreases/goes back to the British fleet. There rank is called rear admiral. The ship of the commander of a fleet, thus the admiral, usually drove in the center of the federation, his deputy, the Vice Admiral, at the point of the federation and the second deputy, the countering admiral, at the end (rear or French contre "approximately", that to 1 January 1899 officially as if counter one eingedeutscht).
Ships, which have an admiral on board, show by a Wimpel on therefore the designation flagship.
