The meaning term of the Cracker depends strongly on the respective context in the computer range. Since beginning of the 1980er years stands it for persons, who manipulate compiled software code. Parallel to it in the middle of the 1980er appeared years a further use of the term, which became generally accepted into the 1990er years finally. Equivalent to the term Crasher is considered the Cracker since that time also as synonym to one "„destructive hacker "“.

The origin of the term "„Cracker "“lies in the English colloquial language and/or the Slang and designates here a breaking open of something or (Zer) a breaking of the effect of a safety system or a locking device.

(Software) Cracker

Cracker someone is called, which changes the function of a software by purposeful manipulation of the compiled program code extended and/or otherwise.

Cracken as sport

There them the program code only as machine code or as intermediate code (e.g. Intermediate LANGUAGE or Java byte code) is present, equals cracking its CrackMes a match within the range of the Reverse of engineering. One prepares the Cracker a program (the CrackMe), which it e.g. provides with barriers like a password inquiry. The other participants try now to out-lever these barriers. This activity represents a good exercise for software developers and system analysts.

Cracker as copy protection Entferner

Although nowadays - based on the large Crackercommunity - only some few (software) Cracker abuse their abilities to remove illegally the copy protection of commercial software they are frequently overall kriminalisiert in the media. A reason for it is to be found in the developing history of the Crackens. Already very early (end of 1970er/Anfang 1980er years) with it was begun to provide commercial software (here in particular computer games) with more or less thought out copy protection mechanisms. Originally the procedure of the Crackens developed thus from the resolution to bring this software for itself or for friendly computer users into a copyable condition. Individual Cracker was thereby so successfully that they made the Cracken a kind passion pseudo, mostly using an anonymizating Crackernamen (pitch name, also or acts mentioned). Into the early 1980er years from this Crackergruppen developed and the part of the scene specializing in the Cracken of software.

Such Crackergruppen is also today still usually strictly organized. Examples of such groups are L4NZ=l0T, the cube, BLiZZARD, CORE, Razor 1911, DEViANCE, Kalisto, W-P-W, H2O, paradox, Fairlight, dynamic duo, Ebola virus crew, team Eclipse and TSRh. Many Softwarecracker are not interested thereby in profit. Rather they regard the Cracken against the time as competition of the groups against each other.

Excerpt from the book hacker country:

"„Software companies looked in the 80's for ways, in order to prevent the individual user before copying the software. The measure however led to it that first loners began, software hobby-moderately to cracken. Later formed smaller groups, which made it it's duty to cracken and in circulation bring software continuously. It lasted not for a long time, until finally the Crackergruppen united to a "“scene"” and organized regular meetings (Copyparties). Within fewer years was based a subculture of Crackern, which stretched a gigantic net crosswise over the globe. Group and member names were held in lists and distributed world-wide by persons, who were particularly divided for this field. (...) "“

Crasher and Cracker as synonym for the destructive hacker

A bad-willing Computerfreak, which uses its abilities contrary to a hacker destructively, is characterized among the hackers as Crasher and since beginning of the 1990er generally also as Cracker.

To its actions paralyzing computer and telephone networks belongs exactly the same as the penetration in stranger of computer systems, carried out with criminal intention. That includes the assumption of control of the strange system just as also as an occupying by strange memory resources and the theft of arithmetic performance for own purposes. The theft, the manipulation or destruction of data as well as terrorizing its fellow men by intentionally caused of crashes of the computers rank likewise among its actions.

With respect to the professional world one differentiates clearly between a Cracker as destuktiven security experts and a Skriptkiddie unaquainted in the thing, which act without knowledge of it, how the used weak point functioned and how new safety gaps can be sought out. Contrary to a Cracker a Skriptkiddie safety barriers can overcome exclusively with the help of a script in form of one "„step by step "“- operating instructions and more prefabricated, strongly automated programs, but is missing to it the ability to improvise in the case of problem.

The disputed change of the term Cracker to the destructive hacker

Into the 1980ern hacker was considered as wissbegierige humans, who investigated the world of the computers, into the depths of the subject penetrated and thereby also in stranger of systems to chop itself could (all the same whether with bad-willing intention or non that is often anyway a question of the point of view). Cracker were all those, which provided generators for license numbers or changed programs, in order to e.g. go around the copy protection. However the determination of a valid de-energising code and cracking passwords are sense-figurativy not very far from each other distant. Like that "„the Cracken of passwords is "“the only point, in which the trace relating to crafts of hackers and Crackern crossed at that time. It is to be noted that the today's Common scythe of the hackers Community, which denies the Cracken of passwords to the hacker handicraft did not exist at that time yet (appropriate quotation from Eric Steven Raymonds "„How ton become A hackers "“: Just as few as one by cracking Sicherheitscodes a hacker will, becomes one by short circuit a car to a KFZ mechanic.). In contrast to this nowadays the Reverse engineering of software as well as changing unsatisfactorily protected software code belong to the hacker handicraft, in order to overcome alleged safety barriers of a system. Depending upon targeted application thus also hackers take advantage of this technology, why a separation of the terms falls at present more heavily than at that time.

To that time it came to large debates over "„White Hats, Grey Hats, Black Hats "“and numerous further topics regarding the ethics of the hackers. Obviously humans needed a term, which differentiates the good from the bad hackers. Now Cracker were at that time Computerfreaks, which in most cases carried out criminal actions. That appears logical, because is only rarely legal a copy protection or such a thing to go around. Since in the middle of the 1980er developed from the fact the misleading picture that all were "„bad "“hacker Cracker, although them, as above already written, with hackers or better Crashern did not have really much in common. For the annoyance of the Softwarecracker so the term Cracker received gradually a second, perfectly new meaning, which exists until today parallel to the term of the Softwarecrackers. For inexplicable reasons however the term Crasher remained in the public large without attention.

The development following in the jargon file of the hackers Community was then deposited for the first time 1990 a reference, which reduces the again understood term Cracker now officially to an inferior or better redundant individual. So the development wanted to use the hackers Community, in order to dissociate itself of the destructive elements among the hackers. In order to underline this, one often availed oneself the quotation from Shakespeares King John (e.g. "“What more cracker is this same that deafs our ears/With this abundance OF superfluous "”). At times Shakespeares were Cracker of people, which provided by raw force, e.g. by bursting locks and doors, admission to secured places, in order to enrich itself in criminal way.

Since that time the attempt, one exists knitted to separation between the terms "„hackers "“and "„to Cracker "“to establish. Cracker and Crasher are the definition of some Insidern according to thus no hackers. The reduction of the hacker definition on a group of property goods is however strongly disputed. Not least so far a surface covering acceptance their definition prevents the fact that the transition runs flowing between "„well "“and "„badly "“and it lacks therefore a really clear dividing line between both terms, in addition, the view that this restriction is too dogmatisch and such a partitioning can be if necessary subjective.
