Currency reserves are from an issuing bank in gold, foreign exchange and special drawing rights means held for the care of the rate of exchange of the own currency and for the financing of foreign trade deficits. Traditionally the US Dollar plays thereby a central role. In the meantime the euro is established however more and more as competition. Currency reserves are relatively rapidly mobilizable reserves of a currency area.
