During the so-called current refinement cheap basic load stream is used for the Hinaufpumpen by water into high-altitude storage reservoirs by pump-fed power stations.

This water is discharged with current consumption points again by the power station turbines, propels these and the generator produces crest current, which can be sold expensively.

Despite the arising relatively low overall efficiency this method for the power station operators is economically meaningful because of the large price discrepancy between basic load stream and crest current.
