The local current supply is offered by the energy and water Luebeck.
Luebeck belonged to the first cities in Germany, which develop a public current supply. Luebeck was the first city, which did this on one's own (thus by an city-own enterprise). After 1884 the request of the "German Edison society had been rejected for applied electricity" on "distribution of a concession for electrical lighting and power transmission for the city Luebeck with the authorization after instruction of the responsible authorities the roads and sidewalks for under and aboveground cable putting to use", because the current supply (like the gas supply) should remain in public control and the development of the technology had not been considered sufficiently advanced yet, the state of the art was already judged one year later by the responsible authority differently and the mechanism of a "cent ral station for electrical lighting" endorses. The order was given on 18 January 1887 to the company Sigmund Schuckert in Nuremberg, which finished the power station to start-up on 16 November 1887 in the mixing race 26. Supplying purpose was first only the interior lighting of living and firms and the outside lights of the port. 1891 were added the outside lights of the station at that time. The remaining road lighting was guaranteed by gas lamps. The generation of current took place via steam engines. The fire-place of the power station (1898 in a first development increased) is well recognizable on city opinions of the west before the Marienkirche. A mains voltage of 110 V direct current was produced.
The plants in the mixing race were constantly increased after pool of the gas, the electricity and water supply for the "authority of the institutes for municipality" 1895 under the direction of max hare. The achievement of the plant grew from approx. 120 KW of 1887 on 332 KW of 1895 and far on 975 KW 1902. The connection of the suburbs began 1902 with pc. Lorenz, 1904/05 followed the areas before the mill gate (suburb pc. before the Burgtor and Marli (suburb pc. Gertrud). In 1905 its own gas-claimant power station were built. Starting from 1906 in the city also the streetcar was supplied with 550 V direct current. The generation of current in the mixing race 26 and the added buildings in the Beckergrube 47-49 pushed in view of the increasing need of borders. Planning for the establishment of a on the area of the gas works II in the Geniner road was given 1909 in favor of the decision to a foreign supply by the Siemens electrical operations AG, Berlin up, in addition the cross-country center beside the Hochofenwerk in Herrenwyk established, which over gas producers, which should produce necessary river. The own production of the institutes for municipality was limited to 2.600 KW. The current supply by the cross-country center became to 15. March 1911 taken up. The three-phase alternating current supplied by the cross-country center was converted by transformers in the mixing race to direct current.
With the foreign stream of the highway also starting from 1909 the streetcar changed over into urban direction could be operated. 1912 were attached Schlutup to the supply, which was important because of the and fish enterprises. Starting from 1914 also in the river no longer was manufactured, but referred by the cross-country center. War and time of inflation braked the development and led also to decreases in the supply, but 1920 were already included the land area (20 villages and 7 property goods) into the supply and so that an important development step carried out. 1921 were doubled from the outset the tension also in the city center from 110 V to 220 V direct current as in the suburbs. 1923 the transformation of the authority became organizational into a body of public right, which carried out "urban enterprises Luebeck", whose new general manager Dipl. - engineer Hencke became. The transformation into a corporation was discussed already at that time.
From 1923 to 1929 the new settlements before the old suburbs were attached to electricity mains. In this task the "light associations" participated, from which e.g. one exists in the gardner lane this very day. Technically the conversion of the transformers to the new maintenance-poorer and more space-saving electric rectifiers meant a progress, which facilitated the capacity development, e.g. in the city center the increasing Schaufensterbeleuchtung (Osram advertisement: "Light lures people") demanded. A new administration building was referred 1932 on the area of the earlier gas works I in the Moislinger avenue. 1937 were the gate of hope first vollektrisch supplied block of flats of the city. The loss of the autonomy brought in the same year the transformation to the body into an own establishment with itself. Starting from 1939 old 6 the kV-net was supplemented through 30 kV-net. Since with the attack Palmarum were met 1942 also the plants in the mixing race, the entire current supply of the city center failed over night. The damage could be to a large extent compensated however still in 1942. Only the unloved fire-place, which had confessed nearly 50 years in the mixing race, was not again established.
