The Curtiss of airplanes and engine company Incorporated was an US-American company itself with the production of airplanes and airplane items of equipment the busy. It was already created 1910 in Hammondsport of Glenn Curtiss. The company supplied the double-decker type Curtiss D, with which Eugene Ely 1910 the first start of a ship succeeded.

By the unfangreichen orders the firm area became too small and in such a way changed one 1916 into the new company headquarters after Buffalo, whose buildings had to be soon again extended however. A branch seat was opened in Toronto. In this year one went also to the stock exchange. Altogether Curtiss employed at this time about 21000 humans and represented the largest airplane manufacturer of the world.

1917 began the work on a Flugboot, which could cross the Atlantic application-related. Before the project could be locked, however the First World War ended. Nevertheless first four machines and with one of these airplanes succeeded also the Atlantic crossing from New York were built to Lisbon in May 1919.

With end of the war Curtiss before the economic ruin stood. It succeeded to save however the company and one turned to new areas. One achieved world-wide acquaintance by the production of airplanes of the CR series, which speed world records set up. This succeeded the Curtiss CR-2 with 358 km/h and the Curtiss CR-3 with 429 km/h into the cutter air running. These machines were propelled by self-developed aircraft engines like the Curtiss D-12, with the chief designer Arthur Nutt ancestor gentleman of all later V-aircraft engines had created.

By steady successes into at that time so popular air running again the military on Curtiss attentively and one orders the Curtiss P1, the first type of the long series of Hawk airplanes of Curtiss.
