The club OF Rome is a not-commercial organization, which operates a global exchange of ideas to different international political questions. The Generalsekretariat is at present in Hamburg.

It was created 1968. The idea comes from the Italian Industriellen Aurelio Peccei, a member at that time of the management from Fiats and Olivetti and of the management consultation Italconsult and the Scot Alexander King, director for science, technology and education with that Paris organization for economic co-operation and development (OECD), which at the edge of a conference in the Academia dei Lincei in Rome met.

Member selection

• the club should be multinational and multi-cultural; all cultures, ideologies, occupations and branches of science should be represented
• Members are handread out, thus select (economists, Industrielle, scientists and other personalities of the public life); Applications are not usual (model is the principle of the scientific academies)
• a high-ranking political office excludes the membership.
• any more than 100 active members (i.e. full members) should not be. At present there is not approx. 65-70, for some years new full members was already appointed. The number of associated members and honour members is not limited.

Generally the common goal of all club members is formulated as follows: "“Our goal is the common concern and responsibility around and/or for the future of mankind!"”

Working and effect

Until today the club OF Rome went in the reason only once in important extent publicly into action - with that 1972 published report the borders of growth, which was arranged by Dennis Meadows. Until today by this book 12 million copies in 37 languages were sold. 1973 were distinguished the club OF Rome for it with the peace price of the German book trade.

In this book a systems analysis is described, after which within the regarded period up to the year 2100 the volume of human managing will reach its growth border. Thus the human existence is in the closed system of the earth in danger. One calls therefore to a reversal, i.e. restrictions of quantity growth are absolutely necessary, then for example the recycling principle must be used strengthened, equally intensified control of the environmental pollution must become the general guidance goal of all countries of the earth. As crucial criterion radical birth control was demanded, which was however not interspersable. If the environment were gotten dirty further in such a way, if the population of world expands further in such a way, if the industry continues to grow in such a way, then before 2100 first raw material crises and hunger emergencies would already threaten.

So far this theory of the OF Rome fulfilled itself club not yet in its Possibly this is connected quite with reasonable conclusions, which were drawn from the very much considered book club of the OF Rome, surely also with technological progress like the miniaturization in the information technology.
