A consortium (v. lat.: consors, - rtis = fate comrade) is a limited combination of two or more legally and remaining economically independent enterprises (e.g. Banks, enterprises or buyers) for the guidance of a common, exactly defined business. Consortia are created frequently for the realization by large-scale projects. The mutual obligations are agreed upon in a Konsortialvertrag. A consortium does not have to go compellingly as such into action. At the so-called quiet consortium it is not well-known the client that it concerns a consortium.
The participants are called Konsorten. In the transferred sense of word the term Konsorten has also a meaning, for instance from unreliable Gelichter. In order to avoid this Beiklang, instead of Konsorten also Konsortialpartner is said.
