The D. stamp AG was a German schriftgiesserei. Beside companies like the Berthold it belonged AG, the Bauer foundry as well as the foundry Gebr. Klingspor to the important writing houses to 20. Century.

History

The company was created on 15 January 1895 of David stamp in Frankfurt/Main as oHG. It was occupied for the time being with the casting of exclusion and wadding as well as the production of Walzenmasse and rollers for the letterpress printing need. Later it takes up already two years after purchase of a schriftgiesserei the production of writings. Within the next three years Handstempelschneiderei, in-house print office, bookbinder and their own engine works to the production of special machines and Hilfsapparaten for the own foundry are furnished.

1900 became stamp exclusive writing supplier for by the German linotype company the refugees stencils for linotype-set and casting machine. To 1974 however nearly all writings appear also for the Handsatz. In the course of the time the linotype GmbH transferred the stock majority at the D. stamp AG.

Over the intermediate step of a GmbH 1901 the company is converted 1905 into a corporation.

Several assumptions like 1919 of the existence of the schriftgiesserei W. Drugulin give the stamp AG numerous precious original stencils of last centuries. From these existence in the following years under conscientious adjustment classical authors are saved again and again into the modern trend. To such a new edition as near as possible at the original also belong the writings of the Garamond family which are based on pressures Claude Garamonds as well as Andreas Weichsels, which appear as stamps Garamond starting from 1925 at the stamps AG.

1941 become linotype over the Mergenthalter typesetting machine factory majority owner.

In the years starting from 1950 some the most important writings Hermann Zapfs appear. So 1950 the Palatino and Gilgengart, 1952 Virtuosa and Melior, 1953 the decoration writing sapphire and 1958 then the classical author optima. 1954 become the stamps AG by assumption of the Berthold AG of belonging portions of majority owners of the Haas' schriftgiesserei AG. The connection of stamp and Haas decreases/goes back until 1927, the year of the participation of the D. stamp AG at the Haas' schriftgiesserei.

Begun 1917 with the agreement of a community of interests with the company Gebr. Klingspor extend stamp its commitment in the following years with Klingspor ever more. 1956 then are taken over the remainder of the company and its writing program.

Meanwhile a classical author and a one of the usually-common writings appear 1961 at the stamps AG: with Haas as new ones Haas grotesque of max of Miedinger sketched and after the assumption since that time under the name Helvetica world-wide drove out.

1967 are introduced with January Tschicholds of some Sabon still called ideal-typical Garamond. It is a joint venture work of stamp, linotype and mono type, since the German printers required for a writing, which runs without adjustments on both types from typesetting machines.

1968 begin with admission of the writing carrier manufacturing for the linotype photo-composition machines transferred to the new Technik.Im resemble year appear also the syntax Hans Eduard of Meier, who already began 1955 with the work for it.

1974 appear with the Present of stamp last hand sentence writing. 1977 begin the production of own photo-composition devices like the stamp typomatic and digital Fonts for for example the linotype CRtronic. One year later is handed over the writing casting department by Berthold&Stempel at Haas. 1983 are adjusted the manufacturing by linotype stencils.

Digital writing and computer typesetting let the market for lead composition writings shrink. 1985 are decided the dissolution by the majority owner linotype GmbH and the writing carrier manufacturing come up in it. 1986 moves the machines and other devices of the foundry from Frankfurt to Darmstadt. The selling of lead writings is taken over by the writing service D. stamp GmbH. The digital writings are driven out today by the linotype GmbH in bath Homburg.
