D-U-N-S is universal the abbreviation for DATA Numbering system, which was invented 1962 by D&B. That today, internationally as standard recognized, numeric code serves the clear identification of enterprises.

The nine-place D-U-N-S numeric code by Dun & Bradstreet and serves as identification number for each enterprise stored in the data base of D&B. The number combination is assigned as random number and to have thus no semantics.

This numeric code is used by the European commission, united nations and the US-American government.

The number combination is equipped with a check digit, which is formed according to the Luhn algorithm, so that coincidental errors can be excluded with the use.
