Damage weight designates the extent of a damage.

In the insurance industry one tries to determine the financial equivalent of a damage. (See also risk management, actuarial science)

Damage knows also imaterielle effects apart from direct material effects (financial damage, e.g. with the credit risk, damage to property) has (e.g. Personal injuries, time delays). They are often seized therefore in insurance tables and numbered thereby (severely disabled table etc.)

During the software development errors are judged by their effect. The damage weight of an error divided into:

• small error blemish (e.g. Right write error in the control surface, which does not disturb the program sequence),
• middle error (a function one implements not in such a way as intended, because a left is not correctly interlaced e.g.),
• heavy error (whole Programteile do not function, the system falls starting from etc.).

Industrial safety

During the risk evaluation in the industrial safety (see risk) the criteria are arranged after damage weight and damage duration and determined endangerments assigned:

• More easily temporary health damage,
• Temporary health damage,
• Lasting health damage,
• Heavy lasting health damage,

or with the guidance characteristic method (e.g. after the load handling regulation) over certain criteria of the work measured (e.g. Weight of the handled load, age and sex of the person).
